US President Donald Trump has given a stern warning to Canada, saying that if it does not end its trade deal with China, America will impose 100% tariff on it. He made it clear that this step can be taken to protect American business interests.
Earlier, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Friday that President Donald Trump is committed to bringing the North American trade agreement under control. He criticized Canada’s trade negotiation strategies, saying, ‘They are very bad.’
A Commerce Department spokesperson said Lutnick was pointing to the imbalanced trade between the United States and Canada and how Canada is taking advantage of America’s $30 trillion economy.
Strong comment on Canada’s strategy
Lutnick, speaking at a conference organized by media outlet Semafor, criticized Canada’s stance against the Trump administration. He rejected a suggestion by a former Canadian trade official that Canada could benefit from a slower pace of negotiations. He called it ‘the worst strategy ever’.
Trump’s stance on trade deal
When asked whether Trump was committed to extending the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), Lutnick said the president considered it a “bad deal.”
