The fear of losing jobs due to Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not new, but this threat will increase further in the new year. Geoffrey Hinton, considered the godfather of AI, says that AI is progressing so fast that many jobs are at risk in 2026. He said that the speed of improvement in AI, especially in terms of reasoning and completing tasks, is more than his expectations. A big turning point came in 2025 and in the next year AI systems will become more capable.
All jobs from easy to difficult are at risk – Hinton
Hinton said that due to AI, all jobs, from easy to difficult, are at risk. It can still replace call center people and its reach is continuously increasing. Earlier it was handling tasks that could be completed in one minute, but now it can also handle tasks that last for an hour. He said that approximately every seven months, AI is becoming capable of completing tasks twice as long as before and in the next few years, it can even handle software engineering projects that last for months. Then a time will come when very few people will be needed for work.
Threat to white-collar jobs too
Comparing the current era of AI to the Industrial Revolution, Hinton said that at that time the importance of physical labor had decreased and now the same is happening with intellectual work. This poses the biggest threat ever to white-collar jobs. Apart from Hinton, many other experts have also warned about such danger. He says that a jobless boom may be seen in 2026. That means productivity will increase in every sector, but employment opportunities will not be created.
