The Supreme Court has issued notices to 10 states regarding anti-conversion laws and asked them to file their replies within three weeks. The Supreme Court has issued this notice on the petitions filed on Tuesday (December 16, 2025) demanding a ban on anti-conversion laws in 10 states.
It has been said in the petitions that adults who marry voluntarily are being targeted through such laws. The law is being used to oppress minorities. The states which have been asked to file replies are Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Rajasthan.
In these states, laws have been made to stop immoral conversion, petitions against which are still pending in the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, National President of All India Pasmanda Muslim Forum, Javed Malik has filed a petition in support of these laws.
The Supreme Court will now hear these petitions on January 28. Chief Justice Surya Kant said that he will list this case for final hearing in the third week of January. The Supreme Court has asked all the states to file their reply within three weeks. On the petition of Javed Malik, the Supreme Court has assured that it will be heard along with other petitions.
Javed Malik says that he supports the anti-conversion laws made in these states and wants that the petitions which are challenging these laws should be rejected. He said that these laws are necessary to maintain peace in the society and prevent forced conversion.
The petitioners challenging the laws said that these laws have become a means of harassing inter-religion couples and interfering in personal decisions. They allege that under the cover of these laws, any person can get caught in the allegation of conversion without any reason. In such cases, people’s personal lives are often interfered with and social tension also increases.
These petitions have also been filed by organizations like Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind and Citizen for Justice and Peace. They say that there is a possibility of the law being misused and this may affect religious freedom and individual rights.
