Such a heart-wrenching incident has come to light from the Government Junior College located in Malkajgiri, Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana. This has raised serious questions on the sacred relationship between Guru and disciple and the sensitivity of the education system. Varshini, an intermediate student, who was a victim of ‘mental cruelty’ in the name of discipline, has died under suspicious circumstances.
It is alleged that two female lecturers of the college tortured the student to such an extent that she could not bear the shock by asking extremely objectionable and derogatory questions related to her privacy.
Family members accused of mental harassment
Family members allege that, due to some reason, Varshini had reached college a little late one day. Due to this delay of just a few minutes, the college lecturers Shri Lakshmi and Madhurima, instead of scolding him, made him stand in front of all his classmates and started mentally harassing him.
According to the claims of eyewitnesses and family members, the lecturers crossed all limits and asked the student, ‘Why was it so late?’ Have you had your periods? Don’t pretend, if it is true then show us the proof. Such vulgar and personal attacks in a crowded class shook the student’s self-esteem.
After returning home from college, Varshini’s mental condition had completely deteriorated. She went into deep depression and was remembering the same abusive behavior again and again. In the evening she suddenly fell unconscious at home. Panicked parents immediately took him to the nearest hospital, but unfortunately the doctors declared him dead. Doctors’ primary estimate is that the student died due to extreme mental trauma, although a detailed report is awaited.
Anger erupted from student organizations and family members
After this tragic incident, there was anger among student organizations and family members. A large number of protesters raised slogans outside Malkajgiri Government College and demanded immediate legal action against the accused lecturers Sri Lakshmi and Madhurima and their dismissal from the job.
The protesters say that this behavior of teachers is not only unethical but also comes under the category of crime. Considering the sensitivity of the matter, the police have registered a case under relevant sections and started investigation.
Mared Palli Police Inspector Venkatesh told ABP News that in the post-mortem, the cause of death of the student has been declared as brain stroke and this incident happened at home. This is natural death. There is no fault of the college management in this, yet on the request of the family, a complaint has been registered against the lecturer under BNS 194.
