WhatsApp users need to beware of a new threat. Government agency CERT-In has issued a high-risk warning regarding Ghost Pairing. In this attack, scammers are gaining access to the WhatsApp accounts of users without any OTP or password. This attack is so dangerous that scammers can read all the user’s chats in real time. CERT-In says that with this type of attack the scammers get almost complete access to the account.

What is Ghost Pairing?

Those who use WhatsApp Web are most at risk of this attack. Scammers send messages to such users in which a link is given. In this a Facebook photo or message is written that I have found your photo on Facebook and there is a link below it. As soon as a user clicks on this link, the scammers secretly pair their device with the victim’s WhatsApp account. This gives them almost complete access to the user’s account and the user is not even aware of it. After being linked, the scammers’ device also becomes a trusted device, which is even more dangerous and they will continue to access chat and other settings.

CERT-In told ways to save

CERT-In has described Ghost Pairing as high-risk and said that neither the user gets any alert in it nor are there any signs of being hacked. The agency said that WhatsApp users need to be cautious. If such a message comes from any knowledgeable person in which the given link seems suspicious then do not click on it. Also, users should avoid giving their numbers on those websites which claim to be connected to WhatsApp or Facebook.
