Protests took place at an event organized at the Azim Premji University campus in Bengaluru over derogatory remarks about the Indian Army and promoting the ideas of separating Kashmir from India. Members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) protested against the university and accused the Spark organization of organizing ‘anti-national’ seminars.
What is the allegation of the protesters?
The protesters alleged that the program showed Jammu and Kashmir as separate from India and insulted the armed forces. During the protest, ABVP workers reportedly entered the university campus and inked the name board of the university in protest. They displayed placards reading “Ban Spark” inside the campus and raised slogans like ‘Jammu and Kashmir is the vermilion of India’.
The university responded
Azim Premji University has responded to the protests. A press release issued by the university said, around 6 pm on Tuesday (February 24), a group of about 20 people entered the campus of Azim Premji University in Bengaluru. They raised slogans, damaged some property and attacked some of our security guards and students. We immediately informed the local police station (Sarjapura, Bengaluru) about the incident. The police took immediate action and caught him.
Condemned the disturbance and violence in the university
The statement further said, ‘The people who forcibly entered our campus were protesting against an event which they claimed was going to be organized on our campus. Azim Premji University had not authorized any such programme. The university follows strict procedures before organizing any event on the campus. We strongly condemn the disturbance and violence carried out on the campus by this outside group.
