If you are downloading AI apps from Google Play Store, there is no guarantee that they will be completely safe. Recently security researchers have discovered a big data leak. This data has been leaked from some AI apps available on Google Play Store. The biggest name in this incident is Video AI Art Generator & Maker app, which was downloaded more than 5 lakh times. This app had 11,000 reviews and it has leaked around 15 lakh user images, 3.95 lakh videos and lakhs of AI generated files.
What caused the data leak?
The researcher says that due to a misconfigured storage bucket of Google Cloud Storage, unauthenticated access to the stored media was possible. Due to this, since the launch of this app on June 13, 2023, it has leaked a total of 12TB of data, which contained about 82 lakh files. After the data leak incident came to light, this app is not able to be searched on Play Store.
KYC data also leaked
The matter has become more serious due to IDMerit, another app of the same developer. IDMerit has leaked KYC data. KYC data includes people’s identity cards, addresses, phone numbers and other important information. Due to this, millions of users in America, France, Germany, China and Brazil have been affected. Both these apps have been developed by a developer named Codeway. Now it is being said that the developer has secured the access, but still such an incident has exposed the weakness of the system.
How to avoid data leaks?
It is very important to be careful to avoid such data leak incidents. While downloading any AI editing or ID verification app, definitely collect information about the developer. Always download only popular apps with good ratings and reviews.
