Key points generated by AI, verified by newsroom

YouTube Content: Videos made with AI have grown rapidly on YouTube in recent months. The platform may claim that it is curbing low-quality content, but a new study tells a different story. According to the report, one out of every five videos recommended to new users is “low-quality content” created by AI, which is now commonly called AI slop.

What does the research report say?

Video editing company Kapwing analyzed 15,000 popular YouTube channels. The purpose of this study was to understand how many videos made with AI are being uploaded and how many views and subscribers they are getting.

The report revealed that more than 20% of recommended videos fall into the AI slop category, especially when a user creates a new account. Researchers found that out of 15,000 channels, there are 278 channels which only upload AI slope videos. These channels together have received about 63 billion views and 221 million subscribers.

The biggest example related to India

The most surprising part of this report is related to India. According to Kapwing, the most viewed AI slop channel on YouTube is “Bandar Apna Dost”, which has more than 2.4 billion views. The videos on this channel feature characters created by AI, such as a monkey who behaves like humans and a very powerful, Hulk-like character who is seen fighting monsters.

Ban on earning, still a game worth crores

Under YouTube’s current policy, AI slop videos should not be monetized, but Kapwing estimates that these channels can earn about $ 117 million annually through different methods. The potential annual earning of only “Bandar Apna Dost” channel is estimated at 4.25 million dollars.

New account, same old garbage?

During the research, when a new YouTube account was created, out of the initial 500 recommended videos, 104 videos were found to be direct AI slop. Apart from this, about one-third of the videos were such that the researchers placed them in the category of “brain rot” content, i.e. content that is brain draining and without any real information.

What is AI slope and why is it a matter of concern?

AI slop is digital content that is of low quality and is produced in large quantities with the help of AI tools. The situation has become so bad that the American dictionary Merriam-Webster even declared slop as the Word of the Year for the year 2025.

According to the dictionary, in the past year the Internet has been dominated by strange videos, fake news, fake advertisements, books written by AI and even absurd cat talk. This content disturbs some people while some people watch it a lot.

Social media platform dilemma

Users on platforms like Instagram, X and YouTube are constantly complaining that their feeds are being filled with AI slop. In response, companies have tightened their policies and have also taken action against some big fake channels. Recently, YouTube blocked two big channels that were spreading fake movie trailers made with AI.

But on the other hand, big tech companies also consider AI content as the future of social media. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has even said that AI will make content sharing easier, which will further increase the amount of content in the recommendation system.
