After the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his son Mujtaba Khamenei has been elected the Supreme Leader of Iran. American senators strongly criticized the appointment of Mujtaba as the Supreme Leader of Iran. Senators say that Mujtaba being elected Supreme Leader is not the change in Iran that we were expecting.
Senator Lindsey Graham says Iran’s replacement of slain Ali Khamenei’s son is not the change we are expecting. The Republican senator from South Carolina wrote on the social media platform X, ‘I believe it is only a matter of time before he meets the same fate as his father.’
Graham has long been advocating attacking Iran. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal last week, he also advised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on how to persuade Trump to take action.
When US President Donald Trump was asked about the election of Mujtaba Khamenei as the Supreme Leader, he refused to comment on it at present. However, in a short telephone interview with The Times of Israel, he made a big statement regarding stopping attacks against Iran.
When The Times of Israel asked him when he would end the attacks against Iran, US President Trump said that he will decide together with Israel when to end the war with Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be part of this decision, but the final decision will be taken by Washington.
Trump told Israeli media, ‘We are talking. I will take a decision at the right time, but everything will be taken care of. After this, when he was asked whether Israel could continue the war after America’s decision to stop the attacks, Trump said, ‘I don’t think there will be a need for it.’
Former CIA director David Petraeus said that the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as the Supreme Leader of Iran is unfortunate. He told the American media, ‘We believe that he will remain like his father, who was a cleric with very radical ideology. I don’t think he is even an Ayatollah, unless he has been promoted recently. When his father was elected several decades ago, he was also not so famous.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned on Wednesday that any leader Iran chooses to destroy Israel will definitely be a target for assassination, no matter what his name is or where he is hiding. Knesset (Israeli Parliament) Speaker Amir Ohana also reiterated the same point and said that changing people does not change the nature of the government and Israel will deal with the new leadership in the same way.
