There is outrage across the country over the death of Angel Chakma, a student from Unakoti, Tripura in Uttarakhand. Chakma’s family alleges that Angel was racially attacked, while Dehradun Police has recently said that no evidence of racial abuse has been found so far.
According to the police, the youth was attacked when he objected to some jokes of the attackers who had come to the liquor shop. Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh said that the police has taken cognizance of the posts that have surfaced on social media, in which the incident is being linked to racial motives.
No evidence of racial discrimination or violence- SSP
According to PTI, the SSP said that our investigation has so far found no evidence of racial discrimination or violence. Angel Chakma, a final year MBA student at a private university in Dehradun, died on December 26. On December 9, some youths attacked him with a knife, in which he was seriously injured. After the attack he was kept in the hospital for 17 days.
What did Angel Chakma’s father say?
The father of Angel Chakma, posted with the BSF in Manipur’s Tangjeng, alleged that his son was brutally attacked as he tried to save his brother, who was hurled racial abuses by the attackers and called a Chinese. According to the victim’s father, the attackers called his sons Chinese Momo.
‘A case of racism’
He further told that Angel told him that he was Indian, not Chinese. They attacked him with knives and sharp objects. Speaking to ANI, Angel’s uncle also said that his nephew’s death was actually a case of racism. Uttarakhand Police said that this is not a case of racism, but it is indeed a case of racism.
