On Monday (January 12, 2026), amid the celebrations of Makar Sankranti in Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, a Chinese boat put two lives on the verge of death. The first incident is from Uppal police station area, where Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) B. Nagaraju was leaving for his duty at around 4:20 pm. When he reached Dakshin Swaroop Nagar, a sharp-edged Chinese manja hanging from the sky slit his throat badly. Due to excessive bleeding, he was immediately taken to Kamineni Hospital in LB Nagar. Doctors have described his condition as serious but stable.
The second tragic incident took place on Almasguda main road in Meerpet police station area. While a 70-year-old elderly woman, Yadamma, was walking, suddenly a Chinese Manjha got stuck in her feet. The thread was so sharp that it caused a deep wound in Yadamma’s leg, causing heavy bleeding. With the promptness of the local people, he was immediately taken to a private hospital, where his treatment is ongoing.

This is not the first incident in Hyderabad, in recent times a software engineer at Gachibowli flyover and a delivery boy in Shamsheerganj have also become victims of this bloody manja. In the last few years, many people have lost their lives in such accidents during Sankranti, after which the administration has imposed a complete ban on it.

After these incidents, Telangana Police has tightened its stand. In the special operation being led by Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, more than 8,300 manjas worth more than Rs 1.68 crore have been seized so far and around 200 people have been arrested. The police have given a clear warning that the use of banned nylon or synthetic thread is fatal not only for humans but also for birds and those selling or using it will have to face jail time. Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar has appealed to the citizens to use only traditional cotton thread so that the joy of the festival does not turn into mourning in anyone’s house.
