The richest municipality of India is BMC i.e. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. There are elections here on 15th January. From the national parties to the regional parties of the country, they are engaged with full force in this election. The budget of Mumbai Municipal Corporation is more than that of many states. Last year’s budget was approximately Rs 74 thousand crores. This is the reason why Mumbai Municipal Corporation is the richest local council in the country.
BMC’s annual budget is more than the budget of these states
The states whose budget of BMC is bigger include states like Goa, Tripura, Sikkim, Mizoram, Himachal Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh. If we look at it sequentially, while BMC’s budget last year was more than Rs 74 thousand crore, Mizoram’s budget was Rs 15043 crore. Apart from these, Sikkim’s Rs 16,196 crore, Nagaland’s Rs 24,699 crore, Nagaland’s Rs 24,699 crore, Manipur’s Rs 29,988 crore, Meghalaya’s Rs 30,003 crore, Tripura’s Rs 32,423 crore, Arunachal Pradesh’s Rs 39,842 crore, Goa’s Rs 28,162 crore, and Himachal Pradesh’s Rs. The budget is Rs 58,514 crore. This means that there are 9 states whose budget is not only very small compared to the budget of BMC, but is also half of it. Mizoram’s budget is not even one third of that of BMC.
BMC is Asia’s richest municipal corporation
BMC is considered to be the richest municipal corporation in Asia. Its budget for 2025-26 is approximately Rs 74,427 crore or approximately $8.9 billion. If we talk about the last 9 years, the budget of BMC in 2017-18 was Rs 25141.51 crore. It increased to Rs 27258.07 crore in 2018-19. In 2019-20 this figure touched Rs 30692.59 crore. The budget in 2020-21 was Rs 33441.02 crore, while in 2021-22 it was Rs 39038.83 crore. In 2022-23 it increased to Rs 45949.21 crore. The estimate of this budget for 2023-24 was Rs 52619.07 crore, whereas in 2024-25 it became Rs 59954.75 crore. A significant increase was seen in this year’s budget, during which the budget of BMC increased to Rs 74427.41 crore in 2025-26.
Budget of other metros compared to BMC
If BMC is compared with the budget of other metros, there is a clear difference in it too. The budget of Delhi MCD is proposed to be Rs 16,530 crore in 2026-27, while the budget of BBMP of Bengaluru is also around Rs 20 crore.
