In view of the Assam Assembly elections, many leaders filed nomination papers on Friday (20 March). At the forefront of filing nominations was senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and state Energy Minister Prashant Phukan, who formally submitted his nomination at the Dibrugarh District Commissioner’s office.
Before filing the nomination of Prashant Phukan, his supporters demonstrated strength by taking out a grand procession from the historic Old High School grounds. The 71-year-old leader, who has been a four-time MLA, is trying to win from Dibrugarh assembly constituency for the fifth consecutive time. Since his first victory in 2006, when he won by a narrow margin of just 175 votes, Phukan has steadily strengthened his political hold. He won the 2021 assembly elections by a huge margin of 38,005 votes, which shows his dominance in the region.
Phukan said that BJP’s excellent record of development work and governance will once again give them a decisive mandate. He said, “Looking at the ground reality and the work done by our government, I am confident that this time my victory will be with an overwhelming majority.”
Lurinjyoti Gogoi also nominated
Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi filed his nomination from the newly formed Khowang constituency. Gogoi, a prominent face of the anti-CAA movement, is trying to achieve electoral success this time after unsuccessful attempts from two constituencies in the 2021 elections. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi was also present at the nomination filing ceremony of Lurinjyoti Gogoi.
What did Gaurav Gogoi say?
Speaking to the media, Gaurav Gogoi expressed hope about unity between the alliance and the opposition parties. He said that he was happy to attend the nomination ceremony of Lurinjyoti Gogoi and extended his best wishes. Thanked AJP leaders for discussing collaborative efforts between the parties and appreciated Congress leaders sacrificing seats to strengthen the partnership.
Taking a dig at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gogoi said that while his alliance gives priority to the people of Assam, the Chief Minister focuses on personal and family interests. He further said, “The people of Assam wanted to see us united and we hope that we will get their blessings in the coming days.”
