Election Commission of India (Election Commission of India) Going to hold a press conference today at 4 pm at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi, in which West Bengal (West Bengal Assembly Election 2026)Assam (Assam Assembly Election 2026)Tamil Nadu (Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2026)Kerala (Kerala Assembly Election 2026) And complete schedule of Puducherry assembly elections (Assembly Election 2026 Full Schedule) About to be announced. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Election Commissioner Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi will be present in this press conference. Model code of conduct along with election dates, phases, nomination, voting and counting dates. (Model Code of Conduct) Will give information about implementation.
Tenure will end in all 5 electoral states by May-June
This announcement is being made at a time when the tenure of the assemblies of these five states and union territories is ending in May-June 2026. The assembly of West Bengal is expiring on 7th May, Tamil Nadu on 10th May 2026, Assam on 20th May, Kerala on 23rd May and Puducherry on 15th June 2026. The Election Commission had completed visiting all the places in the last weeks. Preparations were reviewed in Assam, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in February, Kerala on 6-7 March and West Bengal on 9-10 March. During these tours, meetings were held with political parties, police and administration and the focus was on stopping violence, improving voter list, EVM-VVPAT checking and CAPF deployment.
Assembly elections 2026 will start from second-third week: Reports
The last date for appeal against the voter list in West Bengal is today 15th March, after which the path for announcement of the schedule has been completely cleared. According to reports, elections may start from the second or third week of April and the results may come in early May. This time the number of phases is likely to be less as compared to previous elections. In 2021, there were 8 phases in West Bengal, 3 in Assam and one phase each in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry. Now there will be multi-phase in West Bengal and Assam, while single phase is expected in the rest.
Possibility of change of power in all five states
These elections are very important politically. There is a possibility of TMC vs BJP contest in West Bengal, DMK vs ADIMK in Tamil Nadu, LDF vs UDF in Kerala, BJP vs Congress-alliance in Assam and change of power in Puducherry. The Election Commission has repeatedly said that conducting fair, peaceful and violence-free elections is its biggest priority.
