UPI: UPI payment has become a part of everyday life in India today. From grocery stores to online shopping, UPI is being used everywhere. The greater its convenience, the greater the danger associated with it. Cyber thugs are now adopting new methods and forcing people to make a small mistake due to which their bank account can be emptied within minutes.

How one wrong click becomes a big loss

Often payment requests or links are sent to people through WhatsApp, SMS or call. Many times these messages come from familiar names or bank names due to which people click on Approve or Pay without thinking. This one click gives fraudsters access to your account. Remember, there is never a need to enter a PIN to receive money in UPI.

Be cautious of fake calls and fake messages

Nowadays, fraudsters call themselves pretending to be bank employees, customer care agents or delivery executives. They try to ask for UPI PIN by luring them with any refund, KYC update or reward. As soon as a person shares his PIN, the fraudsters make the transaction immediately. Bank or any organization related to UPI app never asks for PIN on the phone.

Avoid screen share and remote apps

In many cases, fraudsters ask to install apps like AnyDesk or TeamViewer. Through these apps, they take control of your phone and do the UPI transactions themselves. If anyone asks you to share your screen or give remote access, refuse immediately.

Easy ways to stay safe

While using UPI, always keep in mind not to accept any unknown request. Do not share your UPI PIN with anyone, no matter how trustworthy they appear to be. Before payment, please check the name of the receiver and the amount. Also, keep your UPI app updated to the latest version and use screen lock on the phone.

What to do if you get cheated

If you accidentally get a UPI fraud, then immediately contact the customer care of your bank and UPI app. Apart from this, lodge a complaint on cyber helpline number 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in. Complaining early increases the chances of getting the money back.
