The Supreme Court rejected the bail plea of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 North-East Delhi riots conspiracy case, on which AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi has reacted. He said, ‘If you see today’s newspaper, the Supreme Court has granted bail to the former chairman of Amtek Group, who was in jail for 16 months. Kailash Ramchandani was granted bail, against whom there was a case of ID blast. Whereas Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid did not get bail from the Supreme Court.
Owaisi’s statement on Khalid and Sharjeel not getting bail
In an interview to news agency ANI, Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said, ‘It is surprising and shocking that these two people Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam have not been granted bail.’ The Supreme Court granted bail with 12 conditions to Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohammad Salim Khan and Shadab Ahmed in the Delhi riots case.
What did the Supreme Court say about Umar-Sharjeel?
The Supreme Court clearly said that Umar and Sharjeel cannot file bail petition in this case for one year. This decision has been given by the bench of Justice Arvind Kumar and Justice NV Anjaria. On December 10, the Supreme Court had reserved its decision after hearing the arguments of the accused and Delhi Police. The court said that if the testimony is not completed within a year, then the accused can file a bail petition again in the lower court.
Karkardooma Court had granted interim bail to Khalid from December 16 to December 29 for the marriage of Umar Khalid’s sister. The court had also imposed some strict conditions along with the interim release, including that Umar Khalid will not use social media, will not contact any witness and will be able to meet only family members, relatives and close friends. Apart from this, he had to surrender by the evening of 29 December.
These allegations are against Umar and Sharjeel
Delhi Police arrested Umar Khalid in September 2020. He is accused of conspiring to commit large-scale violence in Delhi in February 2020. A case has been registered in this matter under UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act). Along with Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and many others are also accused of being conspirators in the same case. Many people died in the Delhi riots, while more than 700 people were injured.
