Incidents of violence against religious minorities are continuously coming to light in Bangladesh. The latest case is related to Goainghat upazila of Sylhet district, where the house of a Hindu teacher was set on fire. After this incident, the atmosphere of fear and insecurity has deepened among the Hindu community living in the area. The house that was targeted is said to be that of Birendra Kumar Dey, who is a teacher at the local level and is known among the people as ‘Jhunu Sir’. It is being told that unknown people set his house on fire at night, due to which the entire house got burnt and damaged.
The fire spread so fast that the family members present in the house had to come out immediately. It is a matter of relief that no one died in this incident, but the house and the things kept in it were completely destroyed. It is not yet clear whether the fire was set intentionally or there was some other conspiracy behind it.

Video of the incident went viral on social media
The video of this incident has surfaced on social media, in which the fire in the house and the family members running away are clearly visible. After the video surfaced, local people, social organizations and human rights activists have expressed displeasure over this incident and demanded action against the culprits. This attack has once again raised questions on the security arrangements for minorities in Bangladesh. The local community says that such incidents are increasing continuously, but due to lack of strict action against the culprits, the attackers are becoming more emboldened.
Hindu families were targeted
In the last few weeks, several incidents of targeting of Hindu families have come to light from different parts of Bangladesh. The house of a Hindu family was burnt in Pirojpur district in late December, while incidents of houses of migrant Hindu families being set on fire were reported in Rauzan area of Chittagong. These cases have raised concerns about the status of minorities across the country.

Human rights experts believe that if concrete steps are not taken for the protection of minorities, the situation may worsen. At present, everyone’s eyes are on how quickly and seriously the administration takes action in this matter.
