Bengal teacher recruitment scam: High Court asks SSC to file new list of 1,806 tainted candidates with details

The Calcutta High Court has directed the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) to file a fresh report with additional details related to 1,806 ‘tainted’ candidates. The tainted candidates are among the 25,753 school appointees whose jobs were canceled following a Supreme Court order in April last year.

Taking on record the report filed by SSC, Justice Amrita Sinha said that the roll number, name, subject, name of parents and date of birth of the candidates have been mentioned in the list, but the category for which the candidate has been found tainted has not been disclosed.

The court also noted that the details of the school and district where the candidate was appointed in the first School Level Selection Test (SLST) of 2016 were also not made public. Justice Sinha directed SSC to publish the list disclosing all relevant details of the candidates so that they can be correctly identified.

The court directed that the case will be heard again on February 11. Justice Sinha said that the court had clearly mentioned in an order dated November 19, 2025 that the need to publish the list of tainted candidates is for the purpose of identifying the candidates.

Passing the order on Wednesday, Justice Sinha observed that if proper and complete details of the candidates are not disclosed in the list published by the Commission, there is a possibility that tainted candidates will escape and participate in the fresh recruitment process. The lawyer representing the commission said before the court that steps were being taken to publish another list.

SSC is conducting a new recruitment process through 2nd SLST, 2025 for jobs in government and aided schools of West Bengal. In view of the irregularities in the recruitment process, the Supreme Court had upheld the Calcutta High Court order which had declared the appointment of 25,753 candidates for teaching and non-teaching school posts as invalid.
