Whatsapp Accounts Ban: January 2026 proved to be an important month in the digital scenario of India. WhatsApp released its monthly report under the Information Technology Rules, 2021 in which shocking figures came to light. In just one month, 81,79,740 Indian accounts were banned. This report covers the period between January 1 and January 31, 2026. This includes complete details of user complaints, government instructions and suo motu action taken by the company.
More than 81 lakh accounts banned in a month
According to the data released, a total of 81,79,740 accounts were removed from the platform. Of these, there were 19,83,760 accounts which were identified and closed by the system even before any user complaint. That means the company itself took action on about 20 lakh accounts. Indian accounts are identified by +91 mobile number, hence all these restrictions are applicable on users connected to India.
India is the biggest market of this platform. In such a situation, action taken on such a large scale shows how widespread the process of monitoring and preventing misuse within encrypted messaging has become.
What did users complain about?
A total of 27,981 complaints were registered during January. Out of these, action was taken on 520 accounts. The highest number of complaints were related to ban appeals, which numbered 16,328. Apart from this, 11,198 cases related to other support were reported. 139 account support issues and 215 security related issues were also reported.
These figures show that today this app is not limited to just chatting. People are using it extensively for business, studies and also for personal matters, hence closure of account can sometimes have a serious impact.
Government monitoring and following orders
The report also stated that 16 orders were received from the Complaints Appellate Committee and all were followed. This shows that surveillance on digital platforms is becoming increasingly strict. The company says that it focuses on stopping wrongful activities in advance rather than taking action after the loss occurs. End-to-end encryption, along with engineering teams and abuse detection teams, work to ensure the platform remains secure.
