A big relief news has emerged for former Telangana minister and senior leader T. Harish Rao in the phone tapping case. The Supreme Court has rejected the petition of the Telangana government, in which the government had sought permission to interrogate Harish Rao. This decision of the Supreme Court has spoiled the intentions of the state government and has upheld the decision of the High Court.
Actually, the Telangana government wanted to summon Harish Rao in connection with the investigation of the phone tapping case. For this, the government had challenged the order of the High Court in the Supreme Court, in which the High Court had clearly said that no interference can be done in this matter. The Telangana government had filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court seeking permission to interrogate Harish Rao.
During the hearing on Monday (January 5, 2026), the Supreme Court bench did not find the arguments of the Telangana government satisfactory. The court said that there is no need for any interference in the order passed by the High Court. Along with this, the Supreme Court rejected the SLP filed by the government, which is being considered as a big legal setback for the state government.
This decision has come at a time when there was a lot of stir in Telangana politics regarding this matter. Investigation of phone tapping that took place during the tenure of the previous government was one of the priorities of the present government. This stand of the Supreme Court clearly shows that the judiciary is maintaining its balance between the legislature and the executive and it can take a strong stand against bringing any person under investigation without solid grounds.
This decision is considered very important for Harish Rao, because now technically the danger of direct questioning against him has been removed. Experts believe that this stance of the court can weaken the attitude of the investigating agencies to a great extent. At present, the Telangana government can consider the next legal options, but this stance of the Supreme Court is definitely challenging for them.
