The Buffalo Bills parted ways with head coach Sean McDermott after nine seasons and promoted general manager Brandon Beane to president of football operations. The moves followed Sunday’s painful 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC divisional round.
Owner Terry Pegula released a statement explaining the decision. “Sean has done an admirable job of leading our football team for the past 9 seasons,” Pegula said. “But I feel we are in need of a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take our team to the next level. We owe that to our players and to Bills Mafia.”
Sean McDermott leaves with impressive record
Hired in 2017, Sean McDermott turned Buffalo Bills into a consistent contender. He posted a 98–50 regular-season record and snapped an 18-year playoff drought in his first season. The Bills claimed five straight AFC East titles from 2020 to 2024 and reached the playoffs eight times under his watch.
His postseason record stood at 8–8, featuring two AFC Championship losses to the Kansas City Chiefs (2020 and 2024 seasons). Despite the regular-season success, the Super Bowl remained elusive. Buffalo’s latest divisional-round exit marked the fourth in five years, extending a championship drought that dates back to the early 1990s.
“Sean helped change the mindset of this organization and was instrumental in the Bills becoming a perennial playoff team,” Pegula added. “I respect all the work, loyalty, and attention to detail he showed for this team and the community.”
Brandon Beane steps up to guide the franchise forward
In a parallel move, Brandon Beane, general manager since 2017, was elevated to president of football operations while retaining his GM responsibilities. He will now oversee all football-related decisions and lead the search for the next head coach as the team prepares to open a new stadium in 2026.
“Brandon will oversee all facets of our football operation,” Pegula said. “I have full faith in and have witnessed Brandon’s outstanding leadership style and have confidence in his abilities to lead our organization.”
