Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind President Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani has expressed deep concern and regret over Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar pulling the veil of a Muslim woman’s hijab and subsequently supporting it by communal elements and giving inflammatory and hateful statements. Maulana Mahmood Madani said that hijab is not just a matter of dress, but it is directly related to fundamental constitutional rights like personal and religious freedom, which is fully protected by the Constitution of India.
He said that such behavior by a person holding any constitutional post in such a sensitive matter is not only an insult to the woman concerned, but has also deeply hurt the sentiments of the entire country.
Muslim women remain worried about their safety – Maulana Madani
Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani said that the most sad aspect of this incident is that women of all classes, especially Muslim women, remain worried about their safety. Such incidents will not only increase their concern, but there is also a fear that lower level officers and employees may also dare to adopt a more inappropriate, humiliating and aggressive attitude towards women wearing hijab.
Nitish Kumar should consider the far reaching social ill effects of the incident – Maulana Madani
Maulana Madani clarified that Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind has always been emphasizing on the issue that matters related to religious identity and personal freedom should not be sacrificed for political interests or frivolous and irresponsible attitude. He further said that it is necessary for the country’s Ganga-Jamuni identity and mutual respect to ensure full respect of the religious and constitutional rights of all citizens.
Apart from this, Maulana Mahmood Madani also demanded that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar should seriously consider the far-reaching social ill effects of this incident and immediately apologize and ensure that such incidents do not happen again in future.
