Corruption in the engineering wing of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is such that the 10 percent commission for getting the bill passed has become an open secret. On Tuesday (February 3, 2026), the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) team arrested Kukatpally Zone Superintending Engineer (SE) Chinna Reddy red-handed. They were taking a bribe of Rs 15 lakh in exchange for approval of a bill worth Rs 1.40 crore. During this time, a computer operator was also present with him, he has also been taken into custody by the ACB.
Officer caught pocketing bribe notes taken from contractor
The scene seen at the incident site is extremely shameful for any citizen. This senior GHMC official was caught counting money from a contractor and stuffing it in his pocket. This case exposes the deep nexus prevalent in the engineering wing, where a fixed percentage was fixed for clearing the bills.
According to sources, Chinna Reddy had been making illegal recovery for a long time by pressurizing the contractors to stop the bills. After receiving the complaint, ACB planned a trap action and achieved success.
Corruption cases affecting the city’s development work
In recent times, the engineering department of GHMC has been at the forefront in corruption cases. Contractors are held hostage by the authorities and huge amounts of money are demanded for payment even after the work is completed. This system not only eliminates transparency but also affects the development work of the city. ACB has seized cash and incriminating documents from the spot and the accused are being interrogated thoroughly.
The involvement of other officers in the case is being investigated
This incident brings out the bitter truth about the extent to which people holding responsible positions are involved in corruption. ACB has registered the case and further investigation will also find out whether more senior officials are involved in this case. This is a warning bell for other GHMC officials that no one will spare those who commit corruption.
