Chief Justice of India Surya Kant (CJI Surya Kant) said on Sunday (March 1, 2026) that courts should work like hospitals. For example, first aid is given to the patient there so that he feels that he is in safe hands. He also said that the bar is an integral part of the justice system and cannot be separated from it. However, people think that it is only the responsibility of the courts to provide justice, which is a myth.
After laying the foundation stone of the District Court complex here, CJI Surya Kant said that the Bar and the Bench are not opposed to each other but are two aspects of the same institution. A strong bar is the foundation of strong advocacy. Strong advocacy inspires judges to think more deeply, argue more carefully and write more clear judgments.
CJI Surya Kant said, ‘My dear members of the Bar, you are an integral part of the judicial and justice system. You cannot be separated, as sometimes people think that giving justice is the responsibility of judges only. This is an illusion, it cannot be true.
He said that the quality of assistance provided by the Bar is reflected in the overall work of the judge. The Chief Justice said that the better the arguments presented by the members of the bar, the better is the quality of the judgment and when the judgment is logical, public confidence in the rule of law increases.
Justice Surya Kant said that he is a strong supporter of the fact that court complexes should behave and function like hospitals. He said, ‘When a patient comes, first of all he is provided first aid so that he feels that he is in safe hands, his life is not in danger.’
CJI Surya Kant said, ‘The same should happen with the person coming to the court.’ CJI Surya Kant said that once a person enters this premises in the hope of justice, he should realize that he will leave this premises only after getting justice.
He said, ‘My dear friends of the Bar, this is the equal responsibility of both the Bar and the judiciary.’ Justice Surya Kant also said that whichever part of the country he visits, he will appeal to all the state governments to provide a suitable judicial framework for the next 50 or 100 years.
The Chief Justice said that after some time, suitable places may not be available for the judicial structure because the land is decreasing, the country is developing, the population is increasing, industrialization is developing and urbanization is increasing rapidly.
Supreme Court judge Justice P.S. Narasimha, Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra, Justice S.V.N. Bhatti and Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court Justice Dheeraj Singh Thakur were also present at the event.
