Elon Musk Starlink: Elon Musk’s company SpaceX is now going to make important changes in its Starlink satellite network. The company has decided that it will reduce the altitude of its satellites present in low Earth orbit so that the risk of collision in space can be reduced. Why is the altitude of Starlink satellites being reduced?
According to Michael Nichols, Vice President of SpaceX’s Starlink Engineering Department, many of Starlink’s satellites are currently operating at an altitude of about 550 kilometers. They will be gradually brought down and shifted to an orbit of about 480 kilometers. He says that this will improve security in low earth orbit and reduce the possibility of satellites colliding with each other.
Recent incident increased concern
This decision has been taken at a time when a technical glitch was reported in a Starlink satellite in December. In that incident, contact with the satellite was lost and a small amount of space debris was also generated. It was told that this satellite was at an altitude of about 418 kilometers and suddenly its height decreased by a few kilometers, which indicated that some serious malfunction or explosion might have occurred inside.

Michael Nichols says that the number of satellites and debris in orbits below 500 kilometers is comparatively less. This means that the total probability of collision there also reduces. Apart from this, if a satellite malfunctions, then due to its low altitude it can quickly enter the atmosphere and burn up, which also reduces the risk of dangerous debris remaining for a long time.
