Danny Denzongpa Birthday: Came to Mumbai with Rs 1,500 to become a singer, fate made him the most dangerous villain of Bollywood

Danny, who hails from Gangtok, Sikkim, came to Mumbai with Rs 1,500, with just the dream of becoming a ghazal singer. But fate made him something else. Today Danny is considered one of the most dangerous villains of Bollywood.

Guard job was offered
Born on 25 February 1948 in Gangtok, Danny’s real name was Tshering Phinso. He was interested in music and art since childhood. After completing his studies, he took admission in FTII to learn acting. After completing the course, Danny moved to Mumbai, although the initial days were not easy. He had only Rs 1,500. He wanted to earn name by singing ghazals, but Bollywood gave him the role of a villain. As soon as he stepped into films, he had to make rounds of studios and directors’ houses. Once he went to the bungalow of director Mohan Kumar, he was offered the job of a guard. Danny was heartbroken after seeing this. But he decided that one day he would also have a bungalow near the same bungalow and it happened.

Got the role of Gabbar in Sholay
Danny started his career with the 1971 film ‘Mere Apne’, in which he played a positive character. But he got his real recognition from the negative role in the 1973 film ‘Dhundh’. His villain characters were so scary and powerful that the audience used to get scared after seeing them. After this he worked in many memorable films, including ‘Kancha Cheena’, ‘Bakhtawar’, and ‘Khuda Baksh’. Danny was offered the role of Gabbar Singh in the 1975 superhit film ‘Sholay’, but he refused it due to lack of dates.

Received Padmashree in 2003
Apart from Bollywood, Danny also worked in Nepali, Tamil, Telugu and Hollywood films. In 2003, he appeared with Brad Pitt in the Hollywood film ‘Seven Years in Tibet’ and his acting was highly praised. Danny Denzongpa’s hard work and talent was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2003. Talking about personal life, Danny married Princess Gawa Denzongpa of Sikkim in 1990.
