Defense Budget 2026: Effect of Operation Sindoor visible in Defense Budget, record increase of 15%, Rafale and submarines will be purchased in large quantities

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has presented the general budget for the country’s financial year 2026-27 in Parliament. In this budget, the budget of the Defense Ministry has been increased by a record 15 percent. The impact of Operation Sindoor against Pakistan is visible in the budget allocation. There has been a record increase of 22 percent in the capital budget.

Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a budget of Rs 7.85 lakh crore for the defense sector in the general budget presented on Sunday. Out of this, Rs 2.19 lakh crore is the capital budget, in which there has been a record increase of 22 percent. After Operation Sindoor, this is for weapons and modernization for all three parts of the army (Army, Air Force and Navy).

What was the defense budget last year?

Last year (2025-26) the defense budget was Rs 6.81 lakh crore. Of this, Rs 1.80 lakh crore was for capital budget (capital expenditure). There had been an increase of 9-10% in the defense budget for the last decade, but this time the record increase of 15% shows that the government does not want to make any mistake in keeping the borders safe and in security for the future.
