The case of chaos that broke out at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium during the concert of Argentine football player Lionel Messi reached the High Court on Monday (December 15, 2025), when Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Pal allowed the filing of three separate PILs related to the incident.
In these petitions, the court has been requested to intervene to hand over the investigation into the chaos in the stadium to central agencies like Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO).
The petitions, filed separately by state opposition leader Subhendu Adhikari and advocates Sabyasachi Chattopadhyay and Mainak Ghoshal, are likely to be heard together by the court this weekend.
Advocate Bilwadal Bhattacharya, appearing for the officer, sought permission to file a petition requesting the court’s intervention to find out the reasons for the chaos that broke out on Saturday.
He also challenged the three-member inquiry committee constituted by the state government and headed by retired judge Ashish Kumar Rai. The petitioner has alleged that due to this incident West Bengal had to face embarrassment in front of the whole world.
The other two petitions claimed that the state-appointed committee was constituted in a hurry and requested that possible financial irregularities in the sale of tickets and suspicious monetary transactions related to the event should also be investigated.
Bidhannagar police, which is investigating the case, has ordered attachment of the bank accounts of the organization responsible for the sale and distribution of tickets and directed to stop financial transactions between the organization and the main organizer of the event, Shatadru Dutta, who has been arrested, officials said.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the formation of the committee within hours of the incident. Mamta said that the committee will investigate the incident in detail and decide the responsibility and will suggest measures to prevent such incidents in future.
