Wingo App: After a big case of online fraud was exposed, the Home Ministry has completely banned the online gaming app named Wingo in India. Investigation revealed that this app was silently sending fake SMS from users’ mobile phones. The surprising thing is that the people from whose phones the messages were being sent were not even aware of it. As soon as the officials realized the scale of this scam, immediate action was taken and the entire network connected to the app was shut down.
Without permission, users’ phones became a means of fraud
According to government officials, the Wingo app was using users’ mobile devices without their permission. Fake messages were being sent from the phone whose purpose was to defraud other people. In this entire game, common users unknowingly became a part of cyber crime. The plan to send crores of messages was going on on such a large scale that the government had to intervene immediately.
Cyber Crime Center alerts Android users
Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) shared information about this case on social media platform X. Also, Android users were clearly warned not to download or use the Wingo app. I4C also said that the control server of the app has been geo-blocked so that any kind of activity cannot be resumed in future.
Promotional channels and videos were also blocked
The government’s action was not limited to just the app. Four Telegram channels promoting Wingo, which had more than 1.5 lakh users, were also closed. Apart from this, more than 50 videos present on YouTube, which were promoting this app, were also removed. Scams were being spread rapidly through these platforms.
Ban on more than one crore fake SMS
According to the Home Ministry, due to timely action, about 1.53 crore fake SMS were stopped before they could reach the people. The officials clearly said that this was an organized cyber fraud and it was extremely important to end it completely so that common citizens can be saved from loss.
India’s strict stance on online gaming apps
India has already taken a tough stance against dubious gaming and gambling apps. Under the new law implemented last year, gambling based apps were completely banned. Now only skill-based games and e-sports platforms have legal approval in the country. It is clear that the government is now in no mood to take any kind of risk in the matter of digital security.
