Former Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah withdrew his resignation, accused the party high command of ignoring him

Former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Bora on Monday (16 February 2026) withdrew his resignation, hours after submitting it to party president Mallikarjun Kharge. In his resignation letter sent to the Congress President, he had claimed that he was being ignored by the party leadership. Bhupen Bora earlier told that he had sent his resignation to the central leadership of the party at around 8 am in the morning.

Bhupen Bora’s allegations against party high command

He had said, ‘I have resigned from Congress. I have already sent my resignation to the central leadership. This decision was taken to protect self-respect. Expressing his displeasure towards the functioning of Congress, Bhupen Bora said that the party high command has failed to take timely and important decisions on the matters of the organization.

Assembly elections are going to be held in Assam this year and in such a situation, Bhupen Borah’s resignation had created a stir in the political circles. After the resignation, Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi, Bhanwar Jitendra Singh and Pradyut Bordoloi had reached Bhupen Borah’s residence in Guwahati to talk to Raijor Dole chief Akhil Gogoi.

Why did the decision change suddenly?

Assam Congress in-charge Bhanwar Jitendra Singh said, ‘I thank Bhupen Bora for withdrawing his resignation. Senior Congress leader Bhupen Bora is an important member of the Congress family. He had sent his resignation to the National President of our party. Sometimes differences arise in the Congress family. The Congress President has not accepted his resignation. The party leadership including Rahul Gandhi had a long conversation with him. We have resolved it through talks. He was in Congress for the last 30 years.

While avoiding taking names of specific leaders, Bhupen Bora continuously pointed towards internal issues and weakness of leadership. He said that it had become difficult to remain in the party. The former president of Assam Congress said that despite raising concerns on several occasions, no meaningful response was received from the top leadership. He said, ‘This is not a sudden decision. I have thought about it carefully.

BJP had given offer to Bhupen Bora

Immediately after resigning from Congress, Bhupen Bora was offered by BJP. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the doors of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are open for Bhupen Bora. He also said that if Bora joins BJP, he will try to get him elected from a safe seat. The Chief Minister said, ‘Bora has not yet contacted me or the BJP and at present we have no direct or indirect contact with him.’
