Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari raised the issue of pollution in Delhi-NCR during a program. He said that I stay here for three days and due to the pollution of the city, I get allergic. He also admitted that transport contributes 40 percent to pollution in Delhi and its surrounding areas. Gadkari said that I am the Transport Minister and 40 percent pollution is caused by transport. Gadkari stressed the urgent need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and adopt alternatives that reduce pollution to a great extent.
‘What kind of nationalism is this?’
Gadkari said what kind of nationalism is this? Fossil fuel is limited and pollution is increasing. Can’t we reduce fossil fuel use? Why can’t we promote electric vehicles and hydrogen powered vehicles which can cause zero pollution? Raising this question, the Transport Minister said that India spends about Rs 22 lakh annually on fossil fuels.
What are flex-fuel vehicles?
The Union Minister also talked about the environment-friendly flex-fuel vehicle, which runs entirely on ethanol. Also emphasized its ability to reduce pollution and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. This comment of Nitin Gadkari has come at a time when the air quality of Delhi declined drastically on Tuesday and once again the air reached the severe category.
The capital has become the second most polluted city in India with a 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) of 412. Noida, located in NCR, was the most polluted city of India on Tuesday, with an average air quality index of 426. There was a slight improvement in the air quality index on Wednesday morning and it again became very poor.
