Gmail AI: About two years ago, Google introduced artificial intelligence to the common people by showing AI generated answers in search results. Now the company has implemented the same strategy on Gmail. Generative AI is now being added to the email service that millions of people around the world use every day. The aim is to make the inbox smart and reduce the time taken to write and read emails, but at the same time new questions have also arisen regarding the privacy of users.

New entry of AI in Gmail, will the email experience change?

Google has started rolling out many new AI based tools for Gmail this month. Some of these features are free for all users, while some will require a subscription. Google’s AI assistant named Gemini will now help you find, summarize and write replies by understanding your emails.

Now instead of entering keywords in the search box, users can type questions, such as “What was the name of the job recruiter you met last month?” Apart from this, the company is also working on a new AI inbox which will automatically prepare your to-do list based on the conversations present in the emails.

AI inbox

Nowadays, handling email inbox is no less than a headache. The important mails get filled with promotional and useless messages so much that important tasks get missed. Google’s new AI inbox tries to be a solution to this problem.

AI Inbox reads your recent emails and understands what tasks you need to focus on today. This summarizes the conversation and highlights important action items. For example, if you have received a mail from a school regarding admission or a doctor has asked you to fill a form, then AI Inbox will directly remind you of the same, removing all the noise.

What is special between free and paid AI tools?

Google has also made some such AI features free, which were earlier available only to subscription users. These include suggested replies based on your past email styles, automatic summaries of long email threads, and features like “Help Me Write” that lets you create an entire email with just a single command.

At the same time, features like advanced search, better proofreading and more accurate AI overview are available in the paid plan. The feature of searching emails by asking questions is especially beneficial for those people whose inbox is filled with thousands of mails.

Is Gemini reading your emails?

The biggest question is, does the arrival of AI in Gmail mean that Google is reading your emails? The company says that the Gemini system only processes emails, humans do not read them. According to Google, Gmail data will neither be used to train AI nor will it be manually reviewed by employees.

However, privacy experts believe that technically there is always a possibility of a company having access to the data. Google has also clarified that user data can be shared with law enforcement agencies upon receipt of legal orders, as has been happening earlier also.

Privacy experts warn

Experts related to digital privacy say that email should never be considered completely private. As we share more information through Gmail and Gemini, more data will be stored in the system. This means that the same information can be accessed when needed.

Can these features be turned off?

Currently, except AI Inbox, all other AI features are turned on by default in Gmail. If a user does not want to use them, then he can turn off “Smart features” by going to account settings.

Ultimately the decision is in the hands of the user. Gmail’s AI experience definitely makes the inbox easier and smarter, but in return you have to share more data with Google. This is why this new era of AI in Gmail is as convenient as it is sensitive.
