‘Government should ensure that opposition leaders do not become victims of attack’, Calcutta High Court directs Mamata government

Kolkata High Court on Monday (February 2, 2026) made a big comment regarding the security of the opposition leader in West Bengal. The High Court has told the Mamata Banerjee government of West Bengal to ensure that there is no attack on opposition leaders.

Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Subhendu Adhikari, filed a PIL in the High Court claiming that opposition leaders are being made victims of harassment by filing fabricated cases and are also facing attacks by goons.

High Court will hear PIL on January 18

While hearing the case, a bench headed by Chief Justice of Kolkata High Court Sujoy Paul said that it is the responsibility of the state government to ensure that there is no attack of any kind on the people concerned. The court said that the PIL will be heard again on February 18, 2026.

The advocate appearing for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Subhendu Adhikari, cited the alleged attack on his client’s convoy at Chandrakona in Paschim Medinipur district on January 10, 2026, and requested that the state be directed to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.

What assurance did Mamata government give in the court?

On this, the West Bengal government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had last week assured the single bench of the Kolkata High Court that no punitive action would be taken against the officer till the next date of hearing on February 19, 2026. Shubhendu Adhikari had claimed in the said petition that a criminal case has been registered against him on the basis of fabricated allegations.
