Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has described the racial attack on two brothers from Tripura in Dehradun, in which one died, as a hate crime. He said on Monday (December 29) that this is the result of a long-standing environment in which such violence has been normalized by the BJP’s hate-mongering leadership.
Anjell Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from West Tripura, was attacked by six people on December 9 in Dehradun for protesting against racial remarks and died of serious injuries on December 26. This incident has created widespread anger across the country.
Rahul Gandhi cornered BJP
Regarding this incident, Rahul Gandhi posted on X and said that what happened to Angel Chakma and his brother Michael in Dehradun is a terrible hate crime. Hate does not arise overnight. For years this is being promoted through toxic content and irresponsible statements on a daily basis, especially among our youth. This has been made normal by the hate-mongering leadership of the ruling BJP.
He further said that India is built on respect and unity, not on fear and abuse. Our country is a country of love and diversity. We should not become a dead society that turns a blind eye when fellow Indians are targeted. We have to introspect and understand where we are allowing our country to go.
How did the controversy start?
According to the police, on December 9, Anjel Chakma and his brother Michael were drinking alcohol in a canteen near a liquor shop in Dehradun, when another group including accused Suraj Khawas (22), Avinash Negi (25) and Sumit (25) were also present at the spot. This group started abusing Angel and his brother racially. When the brothers objected, they started fighting and attacked them with knives and sharp weapons. Michael also got injured while trying to save his brother.
What did the father of the deceased tell?
Angel’s father is a BSF jawan. He told that the attackers repeatedly called his son ‘Chini’ and ‘Chini Mono’. The grieving father told that Angel told him that he was Indian, not Chinese. Despite this, the attackers allegedly attacked him with knives and sharp weapons.
