He used to cultivate drugs in the temple by posing as a priest and had grown ganja worth lakhs in the garden of marigold flowers.

A sensational case has come to light from Sangareddy district of Telangana which has shaken the faith of the common people. Here, a temple priest, taking advantage of his sacred tradition and the faith of the people, cultivated ganja illegally inside the temple premises. This was revealed in Panchgaon village of Narayankhed mandal in a joint action of DTF (Drug Task Force) and Excise Department on Friday. The accused priest, who was leading the villagers by calling himself a spiritual guru, turned out to be the kingpin of a big drug trade.

DTF carried out raids
Considering the seriousness of the matter, the DTF team conducted the raid under the strict supervision of DC-Medak and DPEO Sangareddy. The shocking thing was that the accused Avuti Nagayya (48 years) used the garden of marigold flowers planted around the temple to make a curtain. He was growing ganja plants among the marigold plants, so that no one could get suspicious. Police said that Nagayya was not only doing farming, but after harvesting the crop, he used to process it, fill it in packets and supply it.

Large quantity of drugs seized

During this operation, the police seized a huge quantity of drugs. These include 685 ganja plants, 17.741 kg of dry ganja and 0.897 kg of ganja. Besides, Rs 30,000 in cash, a digital weighing machine and a mobile phone have also been recovered as evidence of financial transactions. The total international market value of the seized goods is estimated to be around Rs 70 lakh.
This matter is also worrying because a religious leader has broken the trust of the society. Using the sacred land of the temple for poisonous farming is a stigma on the society. The police are now trying to find out whether other people were also involved in this business and where this drug was reaching. This arrest has once again proved that no culprit is safe in the anti-drug campaign, no matter what position or guise he holds.
