Before the Assam Assembly elections, politics has intensified in the state. Announcing on Saturday (February 7), CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Assam Cabinet has decided to send the matter regarding Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s alleged links with Pakistan to the Union Home Ministry.

He said that the SIT investigating the anti-India conspiracy by the state government has submitted its report. He said that the Cabinet has concluded that this matter may have an impact on national security. The Assam government, in connivance with a British citizen and MP, had constituted an SIT to investigate the alleged anti-India conspiracy of Ali Tauqeer Shaikh.

Himanta Biswa Sarma made serious allegations
After the decision of Assam Cabinet, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has intensified the attack on Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi. He alleged that Congress has links with Pakistan. They claim that Gaurav Gogoi’s wife previously worked with an NGO which was allegedly linked to Pakistani interests and MP Gaurav Gogoi has previously visited Pakistan, which is a matter of concern for national security.

Apart from this, he also said that if Assam MP Gaurav Gogoi has any connection with Pakistan then it is very unfortunate. He said that I have come to raise this matter before you. CM further said that I have been told that Gaurav Gogoi had gone to the office of Pakistan High Commission with a delegation and he had met the then High Commissioner of Pakistan Abdul Basit. He said that I do not remember that any leader had taken any delegation to meet the High Commissioner of Pakistan.

FIR will be sent to the central government- Sarma
CM Sarma further said that the SIT report and the FIR registered in this case will be sent to the Central Government. He said that we have not interrogated sitting MP Gaurav Gogoi about his Pakistan connection. He said that we have left this matter to the Center respecting his position. CM Himanta said that if now strict steps are taken like arresting Gaurav Gogoi, then he will be accused of doing politics before the Assam Assembly elections.

He alleged that the MP had gone to the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi with a delegation and met the then Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that I do not remember any leader taking a delegation with him to the Pakistan High Commission. Himanta Biswa Sarma further claimed that the MP had not informed the Central Government about his visit to Pakistan and that he had ‘disappeared’ from social media during his stay there.

What did Sarma say about Gaurav Gogoi’s wife?
Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged that Gaurav Gogoi’s wife worked in Pakistan between March 2011 and March 2012 and was in professional contact with Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, whom he said held advisory positions in Pakistan’s planning and disaster management institutions. According to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, the SIT has found out that Elizabeth Colborne had professional relations with Pakistan-based organizations and had written the papers in collaboration with Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. He also claimed that after Assam Police started investigation, Ali Tauqeer Shaikh had deleted social media posts tagging him.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi rejected these allegations as ‘ridiculous, baseless, madness and nonsense’ and accused the CM of behaving like an IT cell troll without presenting facts. The Congress leader has not yet given any reply on the latest decision of sending the matter to MHA.
