A heart-wrenching incident has come to light from Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, where a retired government officer brutally murdered his wife. The accused has been identified as Debraya Sadangi, who has been taken into custody by the police. The accused, 62-year-old Debraj Sarangi, was a former senior accountant in the Attorney General’s Office and had retired about two years ago.
Retired officer slit his wife’s throat
After retirement, Sarangi was living with his 55-year-old wife Priyamvada in Swastik Nagar area of ​​Airfield police station area. According to the report of news agency IANS, police sources said that Sarangi was allegedly under mental stress. Sarangi insisted on leaving the house on Wednesday (April 8, 2026), which was opposed by his wife, after which there was a heated argument and scuffle between the two. Meanwhile, in a sudden fit of anger, the accused first attacked the victim with his punches and then attacked her with a knife. He stabbed the victim several times on her face and neck, resulting in her death.
Handed over the victim’s jewelery to her daughter
After the incident, accused Sarangi handed over some cash and gold jewelery of the victim to his daughter, who was living at her in-laws’ house in Patrapada area of ​​the city. Later, he went to the airfield police station and surrendered, confessing to the crime. The couple’s daughter Arpita told that her father has been suffering from liver infection for the last six months. Recently his diabetes had also increased and his weight was gradually decreasing. Sarangi remained under constant stress due to the fear that her condition would not improve.
He further told that a day earlier he had tried to console his father and assured him that he would get well soon. During the investigation, the officials also discovered that the accused was suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure and liver related diseases for a long time, as a result of which he was suffering from severe depression.
Police sources further claimed that investigation revealed that Sarangi was reportedly suffering from mental stress and insomnia before the incident and committed the crime in a sudden fit of anger. After surrendering and confessing to the crime, Sarangi was arrested by the police and later produced before the court, which sent him to judicial custody.
