iPhone Feature: Apple’s Find My network has become one of the most powerful security technologies of the iPhone today. With its help, your iPhone can be located even after it is switched off or stolen. This feature is available in all models from iPhone 11 till now, which transmits your encrypted location to iCloud through any nearby Apple device. How does iPhone keep sending location after it’s turned off?
In models from iPhone 11 onwards, Apple has added a low-power Bluetooth system that remains active for a while even after the phone is turned off. If the Find My feature is on, then any nearby Apple device, whether it is yours or someone else’s, can detect your phone.
This device sends your location to iCloud in encrypted form. The most important thing is that this process remains completely anonymous and the thief cannot stop this tracking just by switching off the phone.
How to check if Find My feature is on or not
To track the iPhone even when it is turned off, this feature must be on.
Go for:
Settings → Your Name → Find My → Find My iPhone
Here keep all three options Find My iPhone, Find My network and Send Last Location on. To confirm, open Control Center, press and hold the Power slider, and see if the message “iPhone Findable After Power Off” appears. If this message is visible, your iPhone will be able to be located even if it is turned off.
How to find an iPhone from another Apple device
If you have an iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch, open the Find My app. Go to the Devices tab and select the lost iPhone. The phone’s location will be visible on the map even when the phone has no battery. If it seems that the phone is nearby, then by pressing the Play Sound option, a loud alert can be played in the phone even if the phone is in silent mode.
If iPhone is suspected of being stolen
In such a situation, turn on Lost Mode from Find My app. With this, the phone gets locked by asking for your passcode, Apple Pay stops and a message can be shown on the screen in which an alternative contact number can also be written. You also see the last location of the phone in the app.
How to track without an Apple device
If you don’t have an Apple device, you can still log in to iCloud.com/find. By signing in with your Apple ID, you can see the location of the iPhone, turn on Lost Mode, and even completely erase the phone remotely. Keep in mind, two-factor authentication may require a second trusted device.
What to do to prevent thieves from stopping tracking?
One limitation of Find My is that someone can try to turn off the network by turning on Airplane Mode from the lock screen. To avoid this:
Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Allow Access When Locked
Here, turn off the Control Center option.
Due to this, airplane mode will not be turned on from the lock screen.
