Today we are going to tell you what is the difference between water proof and water resistant and what is the meaning of the IP68, IP69 and IPX8 ratings used.
What is the difference between waterproof and water resistant?
A water resistant phone can withstand water drops and rain etc., but it is not designed to be kept in water for a long time. Waterproof phones, on the other hand, are put through rigorous immersion tests and can remain at a certain depth for a long time. However, there is still a risk of it getting damaged if worn for a long time in swimming pools etc.
What does rating mean?
Is your phone waterproof? The answer to this will be found from its IP rating. The full name of IP is Ingress Protection and the numbers written next to it tell how resistant it is towards dust and water. There are two numbers in this rating. The first number represents the protection against dust and its range is 0-6. The second number shows protection against water and other liquids and ranges from 0-9.
IP68- In this rating, 6 means that the device is completely dust proof. The number 8 shows that it can stay in 1.5 meter deep water for 30 minutes. However, some phones can remain safe in water for much longer periods and depths. A phone with this rating can be used to take photos in pool, rain and under water with light flow.
IP69- This rating means that this phone can easily withstand high pressure and high temperature water. This rating is given to phones that can work in difficult conditions, where the phone often comes in contact with strong currents.
IPX8- In this, X has been used in place of the first digit, which shows that it has not been tested for dust protection. The number 8 means that this phone can stay at a depth of about 1.5 meters for some time. These phones are generally safe to use during swimming and rain.
