How many OBC and SC category IAS and IPS officers are there in the country, the government has released the figures.

CPI (M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas asked questions to the Modi government at the Center regarding the vacant posts of IAS, IPS and IFS officers in the country. Answering this question, Union Minister Jitendra Singh has informed in Rajya Sabha that a total of 2830 posts are lying vacant in prestigious services like IAS, IPS and IFS.

The Union Minister said that as per the data available till January 1, 2025, there are 1300 posts vacant in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), 505 posts in the Indian Police Service (IPS) and 1029 posts in the Indian Forest Service (IFS).

6877 posts of IAS, deployment of 5577 officers
According to the data released by the Central Government, there is a huge gap between the total number of sanctioned posts and the current deployment in the three All India Services. According to the data, the total sanctioned posts of IAS are 6877, while only 5577 officers are deployed. The total sanctioned posts of IPS are 5099 and the number of deployed officers is 4594. Similarly, the total sanctioned posts of IFS are 3193 and the deployed officers are 2164.

State wise figures also released
According to cadre wise data, posts of officers are vacant in many states. As against 652 sanctioned posts of IAS, 571 officers are posted in Uttar Pradesh. There are 391 officers working in Madhya Pradesh against 459 sanctioned posts. There are 359 officers posted in Maharashtra against 435 sanctioned posts. There are 303 officers against 359 sanctioned posts of IAS in Bihar.

How many OBC and SC category officers
The Modi government at the Center has also released the figures of recruitment from reserved categories. The government has also released the data of officers directly recruited from SC, ST and OBC categories during the last five years (CSE 2020 to CSE 2024).

In IAS – OBC 245, SC 135, ST 67
In IPS – OBC 255, SC 141, ST 71
In IFS – OBC 231, SC 95, ST 48
