Smart plugs look like normal plugs but they have smart features like Wi-Fi control, power monitoring and timer. Normal appliances can be made smart by installing them in any socket. That is, you can turn them on or off from your mobile, see the data of their electricity consumption and can also set a time-schedule if needed. This prevents unnecessary wastage of electricity.

Many home appliances such as TVs, set-top boxes, chargers, computers, microwaves and gaming consoles continue to consume power in standby mode even after they are turned off. These are called vampire powers. Electricians say that about 10–15% of the electricity in family homes is spent on this unintentional consumption.
