The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bus going from Hyderabad to Anantapur went out of control and overturned near Itikyalapadu stage on NH-44, due to which at least 20 passengers were injured and the condition of four is said to be critical. The accident occurred during the morning rush hour, when the bus was carrying long distance travelers. Local people immediately started relief work, took out the injured and took them to Kurnool Government Hospital.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus was speeding and the driver lost control near the turn. The bus slid on the road and overturned. There was panic among the passengers after the overturning. Some people were trapped between the seats, who were taken out by local villagers and passers-by by breaking the glass. Police and ambulance were informed. After first aid, all the 20 injured were referred to the government hospital in Kurnool. Doctors said that four passengers have suffered serious head and chest injuries and their condition remains critical.
Police have registered the case and started investigation. In the initial investigation, high speed and driver’s fatigue are being considered as possible reasons. However, technical examination of the vehicle is also being conducted. The exact number of passengers on the bus is being confirmed. Corporation officials have said that the expenses for the treatment of the injured will be borne and a detailed report will be prepared.
NH-44 is one of the busiest national highways in the country and many accidents have happened on this route in the past. Under road safety rules, the Motor Vehicles Act has been increased strictness by amending it from time to time since 1989, and after the amendment of 2019, a provision has been made for heavy fines for speeding and carelessness. Despite this, issues like overspeeding and driver fatigue have been coming to the fore again and again in long distance buses.
