Hyderabad Communal Tensions: Communal tension in Hyderabad at midnight, violence broke out after rumors, police had to resort to lathicharge

A situation of communal tension arose in the Purana Pul area under Charminar zone of Hyderabad on midnight of Wednesday (January 14, 2026) when the news of alleged desecration of a religious place took a violent turn. In this violence that broke out due to rumours, there were reports of the angry mob targeting the police and pelting stones. The police ultimately had to use strong force to control the situation.

According to Kamatipura police and eyewitnesses, the incident started at around 11:30 pm. It is being told that a drunk person had torn a poster near the historical gate of Puranapool. This poster had photographs of some local political leaders and festival greetings. As soon as the information about the poster bursting was received, a crowd of supporters gathered and sloganeering started.

The dispute turned into a clash

The dispute soon turned into a violent clash. The miscreants tried to damage a Dargah (Mazar Sharif) and Chilla-e-Mubarak located nearby. The anarchist elements uprooted the religious flag installed there and threw it on the road, after which the situation worsened.

Violence and police action

When the local youth protested against the insult to religious symbols, the miscreants attacked them, in which many youths were injured. The injured have been admitted to Osmania Hospital for immediate treatment. As soon as information about the uproar was received, a heavy police force reached the spot. The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd and stop the miscreants. The protesters took advantage of the narrow streets and attacked the police. To control the situation, the roads from Bahadurpura to Puranapool have been sealed.

Officials visited the spot

Immediately after the incident, senior police officers including South Zone DCP Kiran Khare (IPS) and ACP Falaknuma Mohammad Javed visited the spot. Security has been increased in the entire area and Rapid Action Force (RAF) contingents have been deployed. This entire incident was the result of misinformation and rumours. The police are now identifying the main conspirators who instigated the mob. On the basis of CCTV footage, strict legal action will be taken against stone pelters. At present there is peace in the old bridge and surrounding areas, but a police cantonment is deployed as a precautionary measure. The police administration has appealed to the public not to pay attention to any unconfirmed news or rumor spreading on social media.
