‘I am not a blind devotee of Nehru’, Shashi Tharoor said about the country’s first Prime Minister – The reason for the defeat from China in 1962…

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said on Thursday (January 8, 2026) that he is a fan of the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, but he does not support all his policies. He said that democracy in the country was established by Nehru. He said that it is necessary to accept Nehru’s mistakes, but it is wrong to hold him responsible for everything. He said that some decisions taken by Nehru during his tenure may have been wrong, but we cannot hold him responsible for everything.

Shashi Tharoor was speaking at the Kerala Legislative Assembly International Book Festival, where he talked about the BJP government and said that he is anti-Nehru, he holds Nehru responsible for everything. He said that it makes sense to hold Nehru responsible in some cases because Nehru took the decisions in them, but it is wrong to hold him responsible for everything.

Shashi Tharoor said, ‘I am a fan of Jawaharlal Nehru, but I am not his blind devotee. I greatly admire and respect his understanding and perspective, yet I do not 100% support his ideas and policies. He has done many such works for which he cannot be praised enough. Most importantly, it was Nehru who established democracy in India. I will not say that the BJP government is anti-democracy, but they are anti-Nehru. Nehru has become a scapegoat.

Shashi Tharoor said that in many cases the criticism of the BJP government is understandable, such as the defeat with China in the 1962 war, some credit for this can also be given to the decisions taken by Nehru. But what they are doing now, he said, is that they blame Nehru for everything, no matter what the issue is.
