Chief Justice Surya Kant on Monday (January 19, 2026) rejected a petition filed regarding judicial reforms. It was demanded in the petition that all the courts should give decision in every case within one year. CJI called it a publicity stunt. He expressed strong displeasure over such a petition filed in the name of judicial reforms and called it publicity interest litigation.
According to the report of Live Law, CJI Surya Kant told the petitioner not to file a petition to speak in front of the cameraman standing outside the court. The petitioner has filed a PIL demanding an order that all the courts take decisions on all the cases within one year. The bench of Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Dipankar Dutta along with CJI Surya Kant raised questions on the intentions of the petitioner.
Chief Justice Surya Kant told the petitioner that you are saying that every court should decide on every case in a year, how many such courts do you want. How can such instructions be given? He told the petitioner that if he has any suggestions, he can give them in writing.
CJI Surya Kant said, ‘If there is a matter of reform in the judiciary, then I will not allow anyone to come to the court, first write down what it is, I will see if it can be done or not, we are all sitting, we will do it.
The petitioner himself has filed this petition. CJI Surya Kant told him, ‘If you want change in the country, then you do not need to file such a petition, write a letter and send it to me.’ CJI Surya Kant said, ‘This petition has been filed by the petitioner himself and it demands several reforms in the judiciary and investigation of some court cases. Two separate cases have been merged into this.
This PIL was filed by a person named Kamlesh Tripathi and he himself was defending his petition. Kamlesh Tripathi requested during the hearing that he wanted to present his arguments in Hindi. Responding to the petition to ‘bring change in the country’, CJI Surya Kant said that formal petition is not the appropriate way for such aspirations.
