IND vs SA 5th T20I: The excitement of the ongoing T20 series between India and South Africa is at its peak. After the cancellation of the fourth match in Lucknow, now all eyes are on the fifth and last T20 match to be held in Ahmedabad. The cancellation of the match without even a single ball being bowled due to smog and poor visibility is being considered a new and worrying sign in Indian cricket. Usually, matches were affected due to rain or bad light, but now pollution also seems to be standing in the way of the game.
Why was the match canceled in Lucknow?
The fourth T20 match to be played at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow was canceled due to dense smog and very poor vision. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was in very poor condition that day, due to which it was not considered safe for the players and umpires to play on the field. The fans were definitely disappointed by this decision, but the health of the players was given priority.
Now why is the eye on Ahmedabad?
Now the decisive match of the series is to be played on Friday at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. This match is also being considered as the final of the series. India is currently leading 2-1 in the series and one match has already been cancelled. In such a situation, this match is the last chance for South Africa to level the series. Whereas India will try to finish the series with a win.
How is the AQI of Ahmedabad?
The biggest question is whether the weather and air quality of Ahmedabad is safe for the match. According to the available data, the AQI of Ahmedabad is in a much better condition than Lucknow. While in Lucknow the AQI had reached above 400, in Ahmedabad it was recorded around 170–180. According to AQI.in, this level falls in the ‘unhealthy’ category, but it is not likely to have a significant impact on visibility.
The levels of PM10 and PM2.5 have definitely increased, but experts believe that this will not cause any hindrance during the match. Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is generally known for its better facilities, where T20 matches have been completed without any interruption.
At present the indications are that the fifth T20 match between India and South Africa will be played on time. However, after the Lucknow incident, questions have been raised on BCCI’s scheduling and policy of holding matches during winter in North India.
