In recent times, tension is clearly visible in the relations between India and Bangladesh. India has expressed concern after the incident of mob lynching of a minority Hindu youth in Bangladesh. After the ouster of Sheikh Hasina government from power, diplomatic relations between the two countries were not the same as before. In such an environment, the question has started rising in the minds of people that if the situation worsens, which country will prove to be more powerful.
According to the report of Global Fire Power Index, there is a lot of disparity between India and Bangladesh in terms of military capability. India is ranked fourth in the world while Bangladesh is down 31 places to 35th. Because of this, India is counted among the largest military powers of Asia, whereas Bangladesh’s army is considered mainly limited to regional security and internal stability.
India gets a huge lead
Talking about air power, India has a huge advantage here. The Indian Air Force has a large number of modern fighter aircraft, multi-role fighter jets, 140 attack helicopters and advanced air defense systems. India has about 1,080 combat aircraft. In comparison, Bangladesh’s Air Force is much smaller. It has only 100 fighter planes and 100 helicopters. Let us tell you that the role of air power is very important in any modern war. India appears to be far ahead on this front.
India’s strength many times greater
Even in the ground forces, India’s strength is considered to be many times greater. The Indian Army has approximately 5,978 tanks, armored vehicles, artillery systems and a large number of trained soldiers. At the same time, Bangladesh Army cannot compete with India in terms of size and resources. In the event of a large-scale ground war, India has a clear advantage. Bangladesh has only 662 tanks.
Indian Navy is far ahead
If we talk about sea power, the difference is even more clear. The Indian Navy has 2 aircraft carriers, 20 submarines, including nuclear submarines, and dozens of state-of-the-art warships, which give India a strategic edge in the Indian Ocean region. Bangladesh Navy is mainly limited to coastal defense and its maritime capability is quite weak. This can be gauged from the fact that Bangladesh neither has any aircraft carrier nor any submarine. It has only 6 corvette warships, which are mainly limited to coastal security.
Huge difference in defense budget
Defense budget is also a big measure to understand the military strength of both the countries. India invests heavily in defense every year, due to which new technology, weapons and military research keeps getting strengthened. India’s defense budget is 50 times more than that of Bangladesh, due to which India is able to continuously invest in modern weapons, technology and research. According to PIB report, India’s defense budget is Rs 6.81 lakh crore. In comparison, Bangladesh’s defense budget is $3.34 billion, due to which its military capabilities remain limited.
