Internet Data Tax: Internet access may become expensive in the coming months. The government is now planning to impose tax on internet data. According to reports, this proposal was discussed in the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. If this proposal goes ahead, then users may have to pay tax on per GB basis, the direct effect of which will be that data plans will become expensive.
What is planning?
India is among those countries where the price of internet data is lowest. Due to this, there is a lot of data consumption. The government wants that this data will be used for positive purposes. By imposing tax on data, the government wants to reduce people’s screen time. The government is trying to increase the consumption of data for positive works. A report in this regard has been sought from the Department of Telecommunications and it has been given time till September. The Department of Telecommunications will have to tell in its report whether doing this is possible or not.
Will this be a new way to increase income?
The government still charges GST on internet data and wants to further increase its earnings by imposing a new tax. Last year, 229 billion GB mobile data was consumed in India. According to this, if the government takes a tax of one rupee on every GB, then it will earn Rs 229 billion.
