A new major attack has taken place in the ongoing war between America and Iran. Iran attacked two foreign oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, including a ship of an American company. The attacks caused massive fires on board the ships, killing one person and 38 crew members who were rescued safely. Iran itself has taken responsibility for these attacks.
Iran attacked with underwater drone
According to Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, the attack was carried out by an underwater drone, due to which both tankers were blown up. The attack took place in Iraq’s territorial waters near Basra. The names of the ships are:
- Safesea Vishnu (Marshall Islands flagged, owned by US company Safesea Transport Inc.)
- Zefyros (Maltese flag, Greek owner)
The attack took place at a time when Iran had already warned that any ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz would be set on fire. Iran says it will not spare any ship carrying oil belonging to America, Israel or their allies. The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most important oil route, through which about 20% of global oil (about 13 million barrels) passes daily.
