The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) on Tuesday (17 March 2026) claimed to have targeted Iranian National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani and Basij Force commander Ghulam Reza Suleimani. The IDF has confirmed the death of Ghulam Reza Soleimani, but it is not yet clear whether Iran’s top figure in power, Larijani, has been killed or injured in the attack.
Israeli Defense Minister Katz has claimed that Larijani was killed in an IDF attack. On the other hand, Larijani’s office said that he will address the press after some time. After the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the attack by Israel and America, Ali Larijani was known as one of the most powerful man in Iran. Larijani was a close associate of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran’s state media issued a statement on Tuesday quoting Larijani, in which Iran’s security chief strongly criticized US President Donald Trump. The statement said, ’47 years ago, on the eve of the victory of the people in Iran’s Islamic Revolution, the Prime Minister of the Pahlavi regime had claimed that the slogans of the crowd gathering on the streets were not real, but the sound of a tape recording. Now Trump says about the anti-America and Israel protests that are gathering in lakhs in Iranian cities, that these are AI pictures.
When Israel and America started attacking Iran, Larijani had expressed disappointment over the lack of support from Muslim-majority countries. He said on Monday (16 March 2026), ‘America and Israel deceitfully attacked Iran during talks. Their objective was to break Iran. Due to this attack, great leaders of the Islamic Revolution, many civilians and military commanders were martyred.
